Larry J. Harrison

July 16, 1936 — March 29, 2024

Larry J. Harrison, age 87, entered the gates of glory on March 29, 2024, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House. He was born to Travis and Rentha Harrison on July 16, 1936, at his maternal grandparents’ home in Thomaston, Georgia.

Larry was always industrious, and as a young boy, sold peaches and pushed an ice cream cart in the summers to make spending money (although he said he ate up his profits in ice cream.) After moving to Griffin, Georgia, with his parents and siblings, he attended the mill village school near the Highland Mills where both his parents worked.

When Larry was a youngster, his family did not attend church, but even then, he had a hunger for more of God. He would catch the bus to go to Griffin First Assembly of God where his Granny Harrison attended. One night, he fell asleep, and when he woke up, everyone was gone, the church was dark, and all the doors were locked. He finally found a window that he was able to get open and barely made it to the last bus of the night. His folks were pacing the floor when he got home. He was probably 10 or 11 at the time. There are not many people who can say they’ve had to break out of church.

Larry worked in the weave shop at the Highland cotton mill, on a dairy farm, and as a lineman for the Duck River Electric Cooperative in middle Tennessee before receiving his true calling as an Assemblies of God minister. For 50 years, he pastored churches in Tennessee, Georgia, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Arkansas before retiring due to health reasons in 2015.

Larry was preceded in death by his first wife, Arlee; his parents, Travis Roscoe Harrison and Rentha Butler; a son, Travis Earl Harrison; and four brothers, Robert, Lynwood, Gary, and Tex Harrison.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Harrison, of the home; son Jason (Bridget) Harrison of Leachville; two sisters, Pat (Joe) Pittman and Sue (Bill) Blum of Griffin, Georgia; four grandsons, Travis (Nichole) Harrison, Logan (Emily) Harrison, Kaleb Dublin, Kameron Dublin; and two granddaughters, Alyssa (Russell) Whiteley, and Jasman Harrison. He also leaves seven great granddaughters.

A celebration of his life will be 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at Emerson Funeral Home with Cass Ledbetter and David Holley officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until time of service at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Jonesboro Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you honor Larry by attending and supporting your local Bible believing church.
